Problem

Configure the number of recovery point entries visible for recovery using the SDR wizard.
Keeping or maintaining all recovery point entries increases the disaster recovery file size. Also, the file either fails to load because of the large file size, or slows down the recovery process.

Cause

Current supported versions of Backup Exec by default supports the latest three full SDR backup chains required for system recovery using SDR. Each backup chain includes one full backup set, its dependent incremental and differential backups, and their duplicate backup sets.

Solution

To change the amount of the backup chains displayed in the SDR view, create the following registry key.
Please restart the Backup Exec services after creating this registry key.

NOTE:
Be aware that a much larger number then the default value of three will increase the size of the disaster recovery file which could result in the symptoms listed under the "Problem" section.
SDR is designed to restore the most current or maybe the two respectively three latest backup chains.
Any older backup sets chains which might need to be restored should be restored via a standard restore process.

 

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

1. Open the Windows registry editor (Start | Run | Regedit)
    
2. Browse to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Veritas\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\IDR
    
3. Create a new value:
   Value name: RecoveryPointsToKeep
   Value data: DWORD
