Problem

By default, if any files and/or folders are excluded on the critical volumes in a backup job, the Backup Exec will turn off Simplified Disaster Recovery (SDR) indicator (Figure 1). This default behavior can be altered by setting a registry key.

Error Code: 0xe000A210 - Due to errors in critical volumes, this backup cannot be used for conversion to virtual machines, Simplified Disaster Recovery, or online disaster recovery.

Solution

To make SDR indicator on even though some files and/or folders are excluded, create a new registry key according to instructions below.

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

  1. Launch the registry editor on the computer being backed up.

  2. Add the following registry key. (e.g. D drive if that is a critical volume) (Figure 2)

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Simplified System Protection\User-Defined Exclusion Resources\D:

  3. Check if SDR is enabled even though some files and/or folders are excluded. (Figure 3)
