Problem

How to enable Unicode or UTF-8 Language Support for the NDMP Option.

Solution

In some environments devices supported by the Backup Exec NDMP option (such as EMC Celerra and NetApp or IBM Filers) can be configured to use Unicode or UTF-8 in order to support the enhanced character sets used by some languages. Backup Exec can be configured to support this type of configuration, however a manual modification to the registry is required.

Failure to change the setting to match the configuration of the NDMP device can result in display issues within the restore selections which will hinder the ability to efficiently restore individual files and folders.

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor can have disastrous results on a server operating system. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application.

1. Open the Registry Editor ( Start/Run/ Regedt32.exe)

2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Veritas\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\NDMP\

3. Click Edit | New | DWORD Value = UseUTF8

The default value is set to 0. To configure Backup Exec to use UTF8 encoding, set the value to 1.

Refer to the following table to set an appropriate value for the key:

NetApp Filer Registry Setting
UTF8 Volume language (e.g. de.UTF8) UseUTF8 = 1
Non-UTF8 Volume language (e.g. en_US) UseUTF8 = 0

EMC Celerra Registry Setting
Celerra - Unicode mode UseUTF8 = 1
Celerra - non Unicode mode UseUTF8 = 0
