Description
Why ADK?
The Microsoft Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) is required for Simplified Disaster Recovery (SDR). The ADK must be installed before you can create the SDR disk image. Some of the components from Windows ADK that are needed to create the SDR ISO image are the Deployment Tools and the Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE). The minimum operating system that is supported for the ADK is Windows Server 2008 R2.

How to download and Install ADK on Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2016
For Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2016, Microsoft ADK 10 is automatically installed when you launch the Create Simplified Disaster Recovery Disk Wizard.
The wizard detects whether ADK 10 is installed on the computer. If ADK 10 is not installed, you are prompted to click Next to start the ADK installation.
If an ADK version other than ADK 10 is installed on the operating system, the Create Simplified Disaster Recovery wizard detects the Windows ADK version and informs the user that a new SDR disk cannot be created using the installed ADK version.
If ADK 10 is installed, the wizard informs you that this is not the latest available version of ADK but you can proceed with the SDR disk creation. Select the check box to confirm that you want to continue using ADK 10.
On the ADK wizard panels, click Next to start the ADK download and installation. The ADK installation defaults are already selected. It is recommended that you use these defaults.
On the Select the features you want to install panel, select the Deployment Tools and Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) check boxes.
Click Install and complete the installation.
Note: The ADK download and install may take time.
How to download and install ADK on Windows Server 2019
Starting with Windows Server 2019, Windows ADK version 1809 and Windows Preinstallation Environment (PE) is released separately from the Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) and need to be downloaded manually. To add Windows PE to your ADK installation, download the Windows PE add-on and run the included installer after installing the ADK. After you run the installer, the WinPE files are available in the same location as they were in previous ADK installs.
It is recommended that you download and install Windows ADK 1809 before you launch the Create Simplified Disaster Recovery Disk Wizard.
If Windows ADK 1809 is already installed, the Create Simplified Disaster Recovery Disk Wizard detects the ADK installed and proceeds to create the recovery disk.
If you have created an SDR using ADK 10.0, you can customize the SDR even if you have Windows ADK 1809 installed on a Windows Server 2019 operating system.
If you have ADK 10.0 version installed, the wizard informs you that this is not the latest available version of ADK but you can proceed with the SDR disk creation. If you continue using ADK 10.0 version, it may not support all the features of Windows Server 2019, such as ReFS, pools and spaces, and so on. It is strongly recommended that you use ADK 1809 with Windows Server 2019 and use of ADK 10.0 with Windows Server 2008 SP2 to Windows Server 2016 operating systems.
Microsoft ADK 1809 is not downloaded and installed automatically when you launch the Create Simplified Disaster Recovery Disk Wizard.
If ADK 1809 is not installed then the following screenshot is displayed. Perform the following steps to proceed with the download and installation
