Problem

Backup Exec automatically cleans the tape drive at the beginning of a backup job when the tape device issues a cleaning request alert.

Error Message

N/A

Cause

This is a feature designed in Backup Exec to automatically maintain tape devices. However, the backup job may be delayed for the cleaning time.

Solution

Follow the steps below to disable the automatic clearing operation.

1. Open Registry Editor.

2. Expand the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\Backup Exec For Windows\Adamm

3. Create the following two registry values with DWORD type and set to 0.

TapeAlertAutoCleanDrive: 0

TapeAlertAutoCleanDrivePeriodic: 0

It is not needed to restart Backup Exec services after these registries are changed.

Note1:

A cleaning job can be scheduled to run outside of backup hours.

1. Go to the Storage tab on the Backup Exec admin console.

2. Right click the tape drive and select Clean -> Schedule.

3. Set a job name and schedule, then click OK.

Note2:

The automatic cleaning feature on the tape device side must always be disabled.
