Utilizing access zone's SmartConnect Zone/Alias mappings

EMC Isilon publishes shares through access zones. Access zones are virtual containers in which the Isilon cluster is partitioned. An access zone may be associated with an IP address pool. A pool is used to map an access zone with a SmartConnect zone and a range of IP addresses. The SmartConnect zone hostname and alias is typically used to discover shares instead of the access zone name. Data Insight discovers access zone to SmartConnect zone mapping and uses these names for scanning the shares. You must configure your preference when adding an Isilon filer to the Data Insight configuration. Ensure that access zone names are DNS resolvable.

From Data Insight 6.4, shares with same name belonging to different access zones will be disambiguated by prefixing <access_zone_name>@. The new share name will be one of the following:

  • \\<cmh>\<access_zone_name>@<share_name>, where cmh stands for Cluster Management Host.

  • \\<smartConnectZoneName>\<access_zone_name>@<share_name>

  • \\<SmartConnectZoneAliasName>\<access_zone_name>@<share_name>

Disambiguated CIFS shares and NFS exports will be visible in Work Space > Data Sources > Filer > Share list view and scanning, auditing, reporting and classification will be supported for those shares. If you have already configured inputs for reports and workflows in earlier versions of Data Insight, correct it as per the new format <access_zone_name>@<share_name>.

Note:

DFS mappings will not be created automatically for access zones configured using Cluster Management Host (CMH) in Data Insight. If you need those mappings, you will need to create it manually.

Following figure denotes configuration of Isilon filer to map SmartConnect zones names/SmartConnect zone aliases and to include access zone name as a part of share name.

Caution:

If you are upgrading to 6.4, your configured shares or exports from the earlier version will be mapped to the MSU corresponding to the access zone.

You will not be able to copy a clickable/resolvable path and paste it in the Go to bar.

Note:

Support for using SmartConnect to discover shares is available for Isilon OneFS version 8.0 and later.

You can also choose to input the alternate SmartConnect names against access zones mappings using a CSV file as input.

Points to remember while creating CSV file for bulk uploading EMC ISILON shares

  • Input should be inline with the chosen radio buttons. The available radio buttons in Access Zones Configuration are All access zones using cluster management host, Chosen access zones using cluster management host and Chosen access zones using smart connect zone name or smart connect zone alias.

  • In case of NFS exports, the export name must match exactly to the name added in the filer.

The CSV file must be placed in the directory DATADIR/conf on the Management server. The name of the CSV is isilon.csv. When DiscoverySharesJob_mrg runs the next time, it discovers and scans shares using alternate name provided in the CSV file.

After uploading the CSV file, run the jobs DiscoverShares_Job and DiscoverSharesJob_mrg to make sure that the things are inline with your selection of the radio button.
