New Operational Notes for NetBackup Appliance 3.1.2

This topic describes the known issues for this release. Some of the issues that appear here may also apply to previous releases. This can happen because some issues may have been discovered after the previous release became available.

You should also check the Release content appendix of this document to see the issues that have been resolved for this release.

Known issues for version 3.1.2:

  • A NetBackup 5330 Appliance must include one Primary Storage Shelf and can have up to five Expansion Storage Shelves. The Manage > Software > Firmware Status command reports firmware status for the first Expansion shelf that is connected to the Primary shelf.

  • High availability (HA) deployments

To help customers deploy new NetBackup Appliance HA installations, Veritas has created a checklist with links to various documents, including those that address related issues. For complete details, see the following article:

    https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100043658.html

  • Password changes for remote users, such as LDAP or AD users, cannot be changed from the NetBackup Appliance Web Console or the NetBackup Appliance Shell Menu. Passwords for remote users must be changed from the server on which they reside.

  • If you upgrade to the software version 3.1.2, to continue support SAN Client backups on appliances, you must make sure that only one single initiator and one single target per zone. Each client host can only be zoned with one FT Media Server. See the NetBackup Appliance Fibre Channel Guide for more information.

  • If you want to configure 16Gb Fibre Chanel cards on the appliance with software version 3.1.2, do not directly connect two 16Gb Fibre Channel cards. Direct connection between two 16Gb Fibre Channel cards makes the HBA link down on the target port. To avoid this issue, always build an HBA link between two 16Gb Fibre Channel HBA cards through a switch.

  • After you replace 8Gb FC cards with 16Gb FC cards on an appliance that updated to software version 3.1.2, the "Fibre Transport Deduplication state" may not show correctly when you run the command Manage > FibreChannel > Show in the NetBackup Appliance Shell Menu. To restart the infrastructure services and refresh the "Fibre Transport Deduplication state", run the following:

    Support > InfraServices Stop

    Support > InfraServices Start

    Manage > FibreChannel > Show

  • If you upgrade a NetBackup 5330, 5240, 5340 appliance to software version 3.1.2, the software self-test reports the following warning message:

    - [Warning] Instant Access service is not running

This issue occurs because the Instant Access feature is not enabled by default after the upgrade.

To resolve this issue, contact Veritas Technical Support and ask the support representative to reference article 100043253 for details on how to proceed.

After the representative has taken the corrective action, Instant Access should work properly. You can run a software self-test to verify that the warning message no longer appears.

  • Starting with release 3.1.1, if IPSec functionality is configured on any appliance that you plan to upgrade, the IPsec certificates may not be retained after the upgrade has completed. To avoid this issue, you must export the IPsec certificates before upgrading those appliances. For complete details, see the topic "Pre-upgrade tasks for appliance upgrades" in the Veritas NetBackup Appliance Upgrade Guide.

  • After the preflight check has completed successfully and you respond with yes to begin the upgrade, the following question appears:

This software update requires a reboot of the appliance after the installation process completes. Do you want to continue? (yes/no)

If your response is no, the following message may appear:

[Error] Failed to move the NetBackup Appliance Directory service to Configuration partition.

This issue can occur with upgrades to software versions 3.1.2 and earlier. To resolve this issue, contact Veritas Support and refer the representative to article 100044013 for details.

  • Although multi-path upgrades from versions 2.5.x or 2.6.x to version 3.1.2 are supported, these upgrades may fail if the preflight check detects insufficient space on the /boot partition. For example, if the appliance was upgraded from version 2.5.4 to 2.6.1 and then to version 3.1, an upgrade to version 3.1.2 will fail if insufficient /boot space is detected. This problem occurs because the /boot partition is completely allocated on appliances that once used the older versions and it cannot be resized.

If you experience this problem, you must reimage the appliance with the version that existed before the failed upgrade attempt, and then upgrade to version 3.1.2. Using the example above (version 2.5.4 to 2.6.1 to 3.1 to 3.1.2), the appliance must be reimaged with version 3.1 before upgrading it to version 3.1.2.

  • During an upgrade to version 3.1.2 on a NetBackup 5240 Appliance with I/O configuration H, a kernel panic may occur. The following describes the scenario that can cause this issue:

    • iSCSI is configured.

    • Fibre Channel (FC) is configured and enabled.

To resolve the issue, reboot the appliance manually. After the reboot has completed, the upgrade continues automatically.

  • After you upgrade an appliance that supports the Instant Data Access (IDA) service from the software version 3.1/3.1.1 to 3.1.2, you must manually restart NetBackup processes to make the IDA service effective. To restart NetBackup processes, run the following commands in the order as shown:

Support > Processes > NetBackup Stop

Support > Processes > NetBackup Start

  • If the upgrade preflight check detects a disk drive firmware version on the appliance that is earlier than 0006, the preflight check blocks the upgrade. To avoid this issue, you must first update the disk drive firmware to version 0006 or later.

Fore more information, see the Veritas NetBackup Appliance Upgrade Guide.
