Backup Exec (BE) remains to be the market leading powerful, simple, secure, and unified data protection solution for small and midsize businesses (SMB), helping to ensure their business-critical data is never at risk of being lost, stolen or corrupted. 

Backup Exec Simple Edition licensing introduced in Backup Exec 22.0 provided a simplified and streamlined licensing model that includes all Backup Exec features and functionality.

Backup and Restore of Microsoft 365 SharePoint and Teams - One of the first major components of this release of Backup Exec, we now offer complete restore of Microsoft 365 data, including SharePoint Online and Teams. Fully integrated into BE 22.1 with no need for a separate add-on or extra costs, we’re confident our customers will enjoy this new seamless and included protection capability. Exchange Online and OneDrive backup and restore have been available since version 22.

Microsoft Azure Object Lock - Customers can now create Write Once, Read Many (WORM) enabled backup sets on Azure cloud storage configured with Backup Exec cloud deduplication. Azure Object Storage offers protection from ransomware and capitalizes on the deduplication to cloud feature

Support for Partial VM Restore - Backup Exec enables you to restore selected disks from within a virtual machine backup, which helps to restore critical disks faster with no impact to other disks and with no data loss.

Support for New Cloud Storage Regions - Backup Exec users benefit from cloud storage choices through support for the following cloud storage regions, enabling greater flexibility and economy:

  • Google: Columbus, Dallas, Milan, Madrid, Paris

Key Features in 22

Support for Microsoft 365 - Backup Exec enables you to backup and restore Microsoft 365 data. The following workloads are supported:

  • Exchange Online
  • OneDrive

Backup Exec Simple-Subscription Licensing - BE Simple consolidates all licenses into a single edition that includes all features and adds the new Microsoft 365 feature. The following licenses are introduced:

  • Backup Exec Simple Core Pack
  • Backup Exec Simple Add On

64-bit SQL Express Database - Backup Exec now uses a 64-bit SQL Express 2017 instance to host its database providing increased performance and optimization.

Support for new cloud storage regions - Backup Exec users benefit from cloud storage choices enabling greater flexibility and economy in the following regions:

Generic S3 cloud provider support with Backup Exec cloud deduplication – Backup Exec now supports cloud deduplication for the generic S3 cloud providers.

S3-compatible cloud storage with V4 authentication - Backup Exec now supports configuring of S3-compatible cloud storage with V4 authentication in Backup Exec.

Support for WORM (Write Once, Read Many) Immutable Storage - Users of Backup Exec can now create WORM enabled backup sets for the following technologies.

VMware Asynchronous Read Performance Improvements – The Backup Exec Agent for VMware users will now benefit from significant backup job performance improvements for virtual machines.

Backup to Deduplication Storage Performance Improvements  Backup Exec users now receive improvements in mount time of media during backup to the deduplication storage folder.

Backup Exec Cloud Deduplication - Backup Exec is enhancing its existing cloud support to include cloud deduplication. This enables the users to perform backups to cloud storage with deduplication, which helps to save storage costs and network bandwidth.

Support for Windows 2022 - Backup Exec now supports backups and restores of Windows Server 2022. Backup Exec and Agent for Windows can be installed on Windows Server 2022. You can find a list of compatible operating systems, platforms, and applications in the Backup Exec Software Compatibility List (SCL).

Support for new cloud storage regions - Backup Exec users benefit from cloud storage choices through support for the following cloud storage region, enabling greater flexibility and economy:

Key Features in 21.1 – GA Release: September 7, 2020

Support for SQL Server Always On – Backup Exec now supports protecting SQL databases using SQL Server Always On availability groups, simplifying the overall backup and restore experience for SQL Server 2012 and later.

Cloud-Based File Share Protection – Backup Exec now supports protecting cloud-based file shares:  Amazon FSx for Windows and Azure files. Keep a copy of your data safe from ransomware and unify your data protection experience across workloads.

  • Partial VM backup on Hyper-V lets you select individual disks or exclude specific disks for backup.

Key features in 20.3 – GA release: 23 October, 2018

  • GDPR Guard - Backup Exec users can now block access to certain backed up items for privacy and compliance requirements of an organisation. With GDPR Guard, users can specify the list of blocked items that should no longer be viewed or restored using Backup Exec.
  • Support for Windows Server 2019 - Refer to the Software Compatibility List.
  • Retry Backup for Only Failed Resources - Backup Exec users can now retry a failed backup job for only those resources that failed during the last run.
  • Backup Virtual Machine Disks Selectively (VMware) - You can now choose which virtual disks to include or exclude when backing up VMware virtual machines. Only applicable with VMware vSphere.
  • Support for Alibaba - Alibaba Cloud Object Storage Service (OSS) is now supported by Backup Exec Cloud Connector.

Key Features in 20.2 – GA Release: 13 August 2018

  • Instant Cloud Recovery – Backup Exec users get Disaster Recovery powered by Azure Site Recovery. You can monitor the replication health and enable replication of on-premise virtual machines, whose hosts are configured with Azure Site Recovery.  Learn more about Azure Site Recovery
  • Support for vSphere 6.7 – Backup Exec now protects vSphere 6.7 environments including VM Hardware version 14.
  • Support for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2016 – Backup Exec now supports protection of SharePoint Server 2016. Granular restore is limited to farm level components.
  • Established trust for vCenter/ESX(i) Servers – Backup Exec users can now review and validate the security SSL certificates installed on vCenter/ESX(i) hosts.
  • Windows Server/10 version 1803 – Backup Exec now protects Windows Server version 1803 and Windows 10 version 1803.
  • All Azure Geo Regions – Backup Exec now supports all regions for Azure, Azure China, Azure German and Azure Government.

  • Enhanced inbound firewall rules for Backup Exec - Backup Exec has enhanced the existing inbound firewall rules to provide access for only the required ports and restrict access to all other ports. This helps to minimise probability of a security lapse or violation.
  • Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) support - Backup Exec can be installed for data protection in an environment configured to use TLS 1.2 to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) 3.1/3.2 requirements.

  • Support added for Windows 2016 Server - Backup Exec 16 supports Windows 2016 Server. All operating system features supported by Backup Exec on a Windows 2012 R2 server are also supported on a Windows 2016 server.
  • Support for VMware vSphere 2016 - Backup Exec supports VMware vSphere 2016.
  • User interface - Backup Exec has updated rebranding for Veritas Backup Exec 16.

Key Features in 15 FP3 – GA Release: 9 December 2015

  • New Configuration Validation feature - This new feature provides information about configuration issues. It detects configuration errors and deviations from recommended settings, and provides recommendations for best practices.
  • Improved backup and restore times for Hyper-V and VMware - New Improved Hyper-V Incremental Backup Processing Option for Windows 2012/2012R2. Backup Exec will skip data in Pagefile.sys during virtual backups.  This optimisation is applicable for both VMware and Hyper-V. Skipping the data in pagefile.sys will optimise backup size, data transfer over network and backup window.
  • Support for new versions of VMware- Backup Exec now supports VMware versions 6.0 U1 and 5.5 U3.
  • New options for Hyper-V incremental backups - You can now choose the processing method to use for Hyper-V incremental backups.
  • New Exchange High Availability Server option - You can now select the Back up from the preferred server configuration only option.
  • Auto-detection of existing database files before installation failure - New installation will check for the presence of Backup Exec database files in the installation directory. If Backup Exec database files are found the Backup Exec installation allows the user to   choose whether to use the new Backup Exec database files or use the existing files.

Key Features in 15 FP2 – GA Release: 19 October 2015

  • Tag as business-critical options - Prioritises the backup of the resources that are the most critical to your business so that the items that are tagged as business-critical resources are backed up in priority order.
  • Enhanced support for Microsoft Exchange - Backup Exec now supports backups and restores of Exchange 2016 databases. In addition, support is now available for Exchange 2013 SP1/2016 Database Availability Groups (DAG) without a cluster administrative access point.
  • Support for Microsoft Exchange 2016 on Hyper-V and VMware virtual machines - Backup Exec now supports backups and restores of Exchange 2016 on virtual machines.
  • Support for cloud storage devices - Backup Exec supports backups to cloud-based storage devices.

Key Features in 15 FP1 – GA Release: 8 July 2015

  • New Virtual Machine Backup widget - Shows you the number of virtual machines that are backed up using agent-based backups and using virtual-based backups. From the widget, you can view a list of the virtual machines that use agent-based backups.
  • Enhancements for Hyper-V and VMware virtual environments - A new wizard helps you create a backup job when you select a virtual machine from the list of servers on the upper portion of the Backup and Restore tab.

  • Enhanced conversion to a virtual machine
  • Updated job scheduling – Updated scheduling feature which offers improved flexibility and more control over your job scheduling.
  • Backup source ordering - Adjusting the order can be helpful if you need a specific source to be backed up before others.
  • Editing multiple backup selections - Edit the detailed backup selections for multiple jobs at the same time.
  • Backing up multiple servers or applications - Back up multiple servers or applications at once using Backup Exec. You can back them up as part of one backup definition or you can back them up individually in separate backup definitions.
  • Mixed backup methods - Create backup definitions that use both the incremental and differential backup methods in the same backup definition.
  • Delayed catalogue operations - Run the catalogue operation as a separate job or you can schedule the catalogue operation to avoid conflicts with your backup resources.
  • Improved credentials management - Select a logon account and test it for use with a server or other backup source.
