The landscape of hybrid cloud data protection today resembles a digital frontier, characterized by the unrelenting pace of innovation, challenges, and obstacles, including cyber threats. The complexity of today’s IT landscape requires organizations to forge ahead to remain competitive while also preparing defenses to fend off the looming threats of sophisticated cyber threats. Many such threat actors have become equipped with AI-driven tactics making their threats more persistent and constantly evolving. This constant adaptation to threats has made it necessary for cyber resilience to be a moving target.

With the latest release of Veritas NetBackup and Veritas Alta™ Data Protection, discussed in our recent announcement, we delivered significant new cyber resiliency capabilities designed to strengthen and optimize cloud operations against rising risks. Let’s explore the latest features of NetBackup and Alta Data Protection, pushing your IT operations to unprecedented resiliency and efficiency.

Cyber Resilience

NetBackup 10.4 delivers powerful self-defense capabilities, the Adaptive Self-Defense in 10.4 with adaptive MFA and MPA is critical in achieving this goal. Using AI to fight against AI, this is the industry’s first self-learning behavior monitoring solution that makes it possible for businesses to detect and respond to threats faster and, in turn, to boost their cyber resiliency overall.

Adaptive Self-Defense can continuously monitor activity so that nothing is flagged while an admin does their usual tasks. The system will trigger an additional multi-person authentication request validating the user action if something odd or abnormal happens, such as:

  • logging in at an unusual time or from an entirely different location
  • starts to do things they’ve never done before, like modifying policies or deleting backups.

The actions are stopped until a designated second person approves them, and what’s cool is that when this happens, the system can adapt, remembering the new action and reducing future false positives.

Another key feature in our self-defense strategy is the patent-pending entropy inline analysis to detect ransomware in real time. It can alert you of potential threats and recommend the best copy for recovery, and the recommended last copy is only in Alta View. This provides significant cost savings since you don’t have to stand up an infrastructure to scan it after the fact.  It is real-time, with near-zero impact on performance, delivering additional resiliency and active system monitoring without any added cost or complexity.

The release of NBU 10.4 also introduced new automated recovery point recommendations, which proactively monitor patterns in your environment and identify safe recovery points. This greatly reduces recovery time and helps to mitigate data loss by providing the most up-to-date backup. If an attack occurs, organizations can efficiently initiate a recovery process based on the most recent and reliable source. This can expedite the recovery process with the confidence to quickly restore operations without lengthy or unpredictable downtime and without the possibility of restoring an incomplete or damaged backup.

The introduction of Recovery Point recommendations strengthens the powerful anomaly detection and malware scanning capabilities already native to NetBackup and Veritas Alta™ Data Protection. Together the various anomaly detection capabilities enhance protection and visibility across an environment. In doing so customers benefit from an intelligent, efficient, and more secure recovery operation effectively improving both Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO).

Cloud Optimized

Veritas Alta™ Data Protection 10.4 also significantly enhances cloud workload support with the introduction of Intelligent Groups for PaaS workloads. Alta Data Protection now supports the intelligent discovery and protection of new PaaS workloads, ensuring that all assets are consistently secured without requiring manual updates to the asset list. If an asset is added or removed from the environment, Intelligent Groups respond to changes automatically, removing the manual task of tracking and updating group memberships.

This advancement now extends support to PaaS workloads, streamlining the management oversight of protection tasks. With Intelligent Groups, organizations can free up valuable resources to focus on strategic objectives rather than the routine maintenance of workload management. The result is a more efficient, secure, and resilient cloud operation, which enables businesses to adapt to changes while maintaining a dependable security posture.

Automated Operations

In addition to our continued advancement of cyber resiliency and cloud optimization, we remain committed to enhancing functionality in automated operations across the NetBackup and Alta™ Data Protection platforms. Our latest release exemplifies this by remarkable enhancements in Oracle Integration capabilities. These features underscore our investment in delivering robust support for Oracle environments, introducing several key enhancements to strengthen and expand integrations with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). In doing so, they bolster the scope of automated capabilities within the Oracle ecosystem.

By introducing Oracle Cloud Snapshots, we provide:

  • the groundwork to conduct agentless snapshot protection for OCI.
  • Seamless integration and protection of OCI assets without needing dedicated agents.
  • Simplified operations and improving security.

We have also expanded our support for Oracle Pluggable Databases (PDBs) within our Instant Access feature. Users can now create mount points for PDBs, like other Oracle backups, simplifying recovery and management oversight.

We have also released full support of Oracle RBAC (Role-Based Access Control), enabling database administrators to manage credentials and systems directly from the NBU UI. This, in turn empowers systems administrators, giving them the ability to manage and maintain compliance across their cloud infrastructure.

These features represent only a few of the vast improvements made to NetBackup in the 10.4 release. They underscore our continued investment in providing the most resilient architecture to improve agility and data security across the integrated hybrid cloud.
