Installing client software on UNIX clients using password-less ssh method

A secure UNIX client is a client which has password-less ssh configuration set between the master and itself.

For UNIX clients which do not have password-less ssh configuration set, you can install software on those UNIX clients locally by using either the installation DVDs or a script.

You can install client software on UNIX clients from the policy Clients tab or from the Actions menu when the Policies utility is selected.

Before you can install client software on UNIX clients, the following prerequisites must be met:

  • You can install the client software from the NetBackup Administration Console only from a UNIX NetBackup server. The server must be the server that was specified in the logon dialog box when the interface was started. This server must also be the master where you currently manage backup policies, and clients must be in a policy on this master.

  • Each client that receives the software installation must have password-less ssh set with the current master server.

The password-less ssh between the client and the master server is not required for correct operation of NetBackup. The password-less ssh can be disabled after the client software is installed.

To install client software on UNIX clients

  1. In the NetBackup Administration Console, expand NetBackup Management > Policies.

    Note:

If you want to install client software, you cannot click File > Change Server to get to another master server. The master server must be the server that you specified in the logon dialog box.

  2. Select the master server name at the top of the All Policies middle pane.
  3. On the Actions menu, click Install UNIX Client Software.
  4. Enter the authorization Token to connect to the master server.

    Note:

Depending on the certificate deployment security setting, NetBackup hosts may require an authorization token to obtain a host ID-based certificate from the Certificate Authority (master server). If the security setting is Very High or High and in case of reinstallation, authorization token is mandatory. For Medium security settings, authorization token is optional.

For more information about how to create an authorization token, refer to the About Token Management for host ID-based certificates section in the NetBackup Security and Encryption Guide.

Select the Show Token check box to view details about the authorization token which you have entered.

  5. In the Don't install these clients box, select the clients in the list that you want to receive the software. Click Add to move the client names to the Install these clients box.
  6. Click Install Client Software to start the installation.

Client software installation can take a minute or more per client. NetBackup writes the messages in the Progress box as the installation proceeds. If the installation fails on a client, NetBackup notifies you but keeps the client in the policy. You cannot stop the installation once it starts.

During installation, NetBackup performs the following actions:

    • Copies the client software.

      • Copies from the/usr/openv/netbackup/client directory on the server.

      • Copies to the /usr/openv/netbackup directory on the client.

    • Adds the required entries to the client's /etc/services and inetd.conf files.

  7. When the install is complete, click Close.

To install client software to a different location on the client:

  • Create a directory where you want the software to reside.

  • Create /usr/openv/netbackup as a link to that directory before installing software.
