About configuring an AMS

You can configure any NetBackup appliance or a container as an Appliance Management Server (AMS). In an environment with several appliances, you can configure one AMS that manages multiple agents.

You can also deploy AMS on NetBackup Virtual Appliances. This ability allows you to configure a VM as an AMS but not as a primary or media server, or to configure a VM as an AMS as well as a primary or media server.

If you want to centrally manage multiple appliances in your environment from the Appliance Management Console, you must configure an AMS. To configure an appliance as an Appliance Management Server (AMS), you set the management role of the appliance as AMS. To configure a container as an AMS, you create and configure a new Linux container. To configure AMS on a VM, you deploy an OVA file before you set the management role of the appliance as AMS.

Before you configure an AMS, review the following prerequisites:

  • Any NetBackup appliance can be set as an AMS. The appliance must be configured.

  • Veritas recommends that you configure the NetBackup primary server or media server role on a NetBackup Virtual Appliance to access Active Directory support.

  • You must configure AMS as a container to manage Flex appliances.

  • You can either set the management role of an appliance as AMS or agent, but not both.

  • External certificates are not supported on the AMS.

  • If you change the hostname of the AMS, then all the agents that were already registered must be added again. Similarly, if you change the hostname of an agent, then the agent must be added again to the AMS.

  • NetBackup appliances earlier than version 4.0.1 that have FIPS enabled are not supported.

Use the following procedures to configure an AMS:
