Prerequisites for configuring virtual machines for recovery from vCloud Director to vCloud Director
Before you run the wizard to configure disaster recovery protection for a resiliency group of VMware virtual machines from vCloud Director to vCloud Director, ensure that you have met the following prerequisites for the virtualization environment:
VMware Tools must be installed on the virtual machines.
Ensure that the RHEL hosts have Perl installed. After recovering to the vCloud Director data center, the virtual machines will not be accessible over the network if Perl is not installed.
If you add new disks, ensure that they are visible from the guest operating system.
If a virtual machine has more than one ethernet adapter, then all of them should have either static IP configuration or DHCP IP configuration. A mix of static and DHCP IP configuration is not supported on the same virtual machine.
On Linux virtual machines, ensure that all the virtual NICs attached to the selected virtual machines have a valid IP address. The IP address may be assigned statically or via DHCP protocol.
Enough storage must be available on the target (recovery) data center for provisioning the replicated virtual machines.
Ensure that the virtual machine must have enough storage for the dependent and independent disks. This extra storage is required when you migrate back to the source data center.
Ensure that you have 500 MB of free space on each IMS to upload an ISO image to the catalog.
The Replication Gateways on the source and the target (recovery) data center must have external storage equivalent to 12GB for each virtual machine protected by the gateway pair. For example, if a gateway pair supports 10 virtual machines, the source and target (recovery) gateway must each have 120GB of external storage.
A maximum of 45 disks can be attached to the Replication Gateway on vCloud Director. The total number of disks from the virtual machines in the resiliency group and the number of disks that are already attached to the gateway should not exceed this number. This is a VMware limitation.
Enable UUIDs for virtual machine disks (disk.enableuuid=true).
If you clone multiple virtual machines from the same template, then ensure that the UUIDs are unique for all the disks across all the virtual machines.
If the status of the virtual machine on the recovery data center is not correctly displayed, then you need to refresh it.
Ensure that correct values are defined for all the following settings in the Network Specification tab on the vCloud Director Web console for the vCloud network to which the virtual machines are connected to.
Gateway address
Network mask
Primary and Secondary DNS
DNS suffix
If one or more of these values are not defined, then after performing the migrate or takeover operation, the virtual machines may not get attached to the Infrastructure Management Server (IMS) in vCloud Director. Subsequently you cannot migrate back to the source data center.
If you want to migrate the virtual machines on some specific datastores in vCloud, then you need to create a storage policy. If you do not create a storage policy, the virtual machines are migrated to any of the available datastores.
