NetBackup Virtual Appliance 3.1.2 new features, enhancements, and changes

The following list describes the new features, enhancements, and changes in the NetBackup Virtual Appliance 3.1.2 release:

  • Introducing the NetBackup Virtual Appliance master server

    The NetBackup Virtual Appliance master server operates as dedicated NetBackup master server. You configure and use this appliance much like you would use a regular NetBackup master server with no attached storage.

  • Introducing the NetBackup Virtual Appliance CloudCatalyst

    The NetBackup Virtual Appliance Appliance is a customized configuration of the NetBackup Virtual Appliance that specifically supports NetBackup CloudCatalyst deduplication. The NetBackup Virtual Appliance CloudCatalyst contains 350 GB of internal storage and 16 GB of memory.

    CloudCatalyst uses MSDP deduplication technology to upload deduplicated data to the cloud. The data is uploaded by the CloudCatalyst-enabled MSDP cloud storage server, which first stores data in a local cache before uploading it to cloud storage. A single NetBackup Virtual Appliance CloudCatalyst Appliance supports a cloud storage bucket of up to 1 PB in size.

    Note:

    The NetBackup Virtual Appliance CloudCatalyst does not support adding additional storage space.

  • Starting with software version 3.1.2, NetBackup Virtual Appliance supports Link Aggregation (bonds). Use the Main > Network > LinkAggregation commands to create, delete, enable, disable a bond and view bonding information.

    Note:

    The initial configuration wizard (Network > Configure) does not support configuring Link Aggregation (bonds). You can create a bond before or after you complete the wizard.

    Make sure that eth1 is not part of a bond before you perform the initial configuration. After the initial configuration, eth1 is available for bonding.

  • Veritas Smart Meter is a web-based tool that enables Veritas customers and partners to monitor their protection capacity. It helps you manage your NetBackup deployment more efficiently, spot trends, and plan for the future. With accurate, near real-time reporting, it reveals the total amount of data that is backed up. Alerts provide you a warning before you exceed your capacity limits. Smart Meter requires NetBackup 8.1.2 and later. For complete details, see the Veritas Smart Meter Getting Started Guide.

  • Starting with this release, NetBackup Virtual Appliance supports the NetBackup role-based access control (RBAC) feature. When you perform the initial configuration on a new master server appliance with version 3.1.2, or when upgrading a master server appliance to version 3.1.2, the nbasecadmin user is created automatically. This user is set to the Security Administrator role for RBAC to perform the necessary RBAC functions from the NetBackup Web UI.   • Starting with this release, the NetBackup Key Management Service (KMS) supports encryption for MSDP. After KMS is configured and running on the master server, you can enable KMS encryption for MSDP on all of the media servers that are associated with the master server.

  • Starting with this release, a rollback no longer occurs automatically if the post-upgrade self-test fails. Instead, the upgrade process is paused until you select one of the following options:

    • Type a to try the upgrade again.

    • Type r to initiate a rollback.

    If the upgrade fails for any other reason, a rollback occurs automatically as usual.

  • Starting with this release, the Main > Settings > Password command allows you to change the password for local users only. Passwords for remote users can no longer be changed with this command.

  • Starting with this release, a firewall policy provides added network security for the appliance. This feature changes the firewall default zone from "trusted" to "public". To provide maximum security, specific incoming connections (NetBackup ports in the firewall rules) are opened automatically while others are blocked automatically during various operations. After the appliance initial configuration is completed, default settings are enforced for open NetBackup ports on the appliance.

  • Starting with this release, NetBackup Virtual Appliance gathers telemetry information during upgrades. This feature gathers information at various stages of the upgrade in the form of events. If a failure occurs, it also collects logs to help identify the root cause of the failure. If Call Home is enabled, the collected logs and events are sent to the AutoSupport server. If Call Home is disabled, the logs and events are saved on the appliance.

  • Starting with this release, the Telnet package has been removed from the Veritas Operating System (VxOS). The package has been removed to comply with the STIG feature when it is enabled on NetBackup appliances.
