Configuring the File copy utility
The File copy is used to support the migration of the data with stubs.
When migrating Seamless stubs from one server to another, it is recommended to install the File copy utility on the destination server.
Note:
It is recommended that you install and configure the Retrieval service before beginning to copy any stubbed data to avoid any interruptions with user retrievals.
Refer to the prerequisites and procedure to install the File copy utility.
See Installing or upgrading services and utilities.
File copy utility features:
Recreate the stubs, ensures that the tag on the data is correct, and prevents a restore during the process of stub recreation.
Preserve the dates and permissions of all files (stubbed and non-stubbed).
To configure the File copy utility
- Click Start > > File copy utility.
- In the File Copy utility, enter the source and the destination path to migrate the data.
- Optionally, perform the following steps:
Click Change Folder Exclusions to add the folders you want to exclude in the migration activity.
In the Configure folder exclusion window, add the exclusions, and then click OK.
Click Change Copy Options to review or change the options.
Existing Destination File Behavior: There are three options for Existing Destination File Behavior. When the utility runs, it will scan the source and destination for the same file. If it finds one, the default behavior is to skip it. However, it can be changed by using one of the two alternatives. A scenario where it can be useful is when running the tool multiple times against the same data set over a period of time. When it is finally time to make one last pass of the data, the most recent version of the file can be copied by using the last option.
Copy Folder Permissions: While this is a great feature, it is not recommended to be used as a continuous synchronization engine as its primary use case is server migrations. Even if the destination folder already exists, the permissions will be synchronized on each run, as long as the points below are met.
The synchronization of permissions is only additive, which means that ACEs that are missing in the destination are added, but ACEs that are in the destination but not in the sources are not taken away.
An ACE will always be created for the user running the tool.
ACEs for users that cannot be resolved will be skipped, and a warning will be output.
Threads: Adjust the number of threads used for the copy if needed.
Retries on Errors: Adjust the number of retries if needed.
Delay between Retries (Msec): Adjust the delay between retries if needed.
- After making the changes, click OK.
- Click Start copy.
